The Dallas Standard Wraps Up 2015, Sets Goals for 2016

Leaders at The Dallas Standard are pleased to see their year-end objectives for 2015 being met or exceeded. The firm's director looks forward to establishing higher targets for 2016, and shared the goal-setting strategy she employs.

“I’m not one for settling. I like moving forward, talking about the things I’m doing and the victories I’m going to win,” shared Taylor, The Dallas Standard’s director of operations. “It’s my approach to both life and business leadership.” Taylor continued, saying that goals are the only ways for a person to know not only where she or he is going, but also whether progress is being made. The same, Taylor says, is true for organizations as well.

The director elaborated further, saying, “Without well-defined objectives that provide standards against which progress can be measured, a company will simply coast. In today’s competitive business climate, that’s the kiss of death. Forward progress is required to stay relevant in the marketplace.” This includes not only financial metrics, but also goals that are not so easily measured, such as customer satisfaction, internal promotions, and even loss prevention.

"SMART goals have made a tremendous impact on The Dallas Standard, and I use the same system for my personal ambitions as well. This is how we've managed to stay on track all year long, and how I know 2016 will be even better!"

The Dallas Standard’s Director on How to Set a Goal for Any Desired Outcome

According to Taylor, there is a system that can be used by anyone to create an action plan for every objective. “Once we adopted the SMART system for setting goals here at The Dallas Standard, our productivity and results really skyrocketed.”

SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. It’s a practical approach that turns wishes – the things many people mistake for goals, Taylor says – into action steps. “If a company leader says he or she wants to have more sales this year than last, that’s just a wish. It’s necessary to assign a specific and measurable amount of sales to that idea before it becomes a real objective.”

To continue with the example, The Dallas Standard’s director says that whatever number the business leader assigns must be within reach in order to motivate the team. “Tripling sales is probably unattainable, and will actually demotivate your crew,” she added. Then, there should be ways of charting progress toward goal fulfillment, such as quarterly or even monthly reviews. Finally, setting a deadline will help make sure that a team knows its target and stays focused.
