MyCanoe POP Lets Paddlers Maximize Their Leisure Time

Kickstarter for Lightweight, Easily Portable Folding Canoe Launches this Week

When it comes to canoeing, most would agree that “hurry” is not a welcome part of the paddling equation. Yet, with limited time set aside in the average American’s daily schedule for sports and leisure, the faster that paddlers can get on the water and the simpler the process, the better. That is the premise behind the award-winning Origami Folding Canoe. The invention proved so popular when launched three years ago, that the developers at MyCanoe have taken their design to the next level and launched a Kickstarter this week to help bring the new iteration of the product – called MyCanoe POP - to market.

POP is a two-person, 52-pound, 14-foot folding canoe that the developers say can fit in a closet and travel in the back of any-sized car with set-up estimated at five minutes. Designed for easy transition in and out of the water, the model has built-in keels on the bow and stern for improved stability and tracking – which they say benefits even less experienced adventurers. It is made from custom polypropylene with a 15-year UV treatment and its reinforced gunwales and stabilizers allow users to customize their POP for everything from leisurely paddling to fishing to tackling choppy waters. POP can even be equipped with a trolling motor for fishing, boasts room for equipment and gear, and can be checked as luggage on commercial flights.

MyCanoe POP and its predecessor version 3.0 were born of a frustrating road trip by founder Paul Jin, an engineer and long-range swimmer.

“After getting our canoe out of storage, cleaning it up, getting it mounted on the car roof then dealing with rattling straps and having to be extra cautious on highways, we were stressed out by the time we got to our destination. Then there was the unload. Then doing it all over again on the way home,” said Jin. “Needless to say, we spent most of the car ride home talking about how to build a better canoe – one that fits our modern lifestyles and doesn’t sacrifice quality and durability.”

“We never stop looking for ways to improve our product design in response to customer feedback, evolution of materials and our own research. POP was built to be even more rigid, sturdy, light-weight and easily portable - and we cut the set-up time in half. The response during our beta testing has been overwhelmingly positive,” explained Jin.

“We want to bring spontaneity back to the paddle experience and MyCanoe POP does that,” he added.

The patented and safety-certified Origami Folding Canoe has earned a number of awards including Top Products from Boating Industry, Boat of the Year at the International Boat & Sailing Expo, Coolest Gear of the Show at the Paddle Expo and many other honors for design and ingenuity.
