Get My Auto Reports on Scion - Toyota Transition

As of August 2016, Scion is formally transitioning back into the Toyota brand, after being its own stand-alone entity since 2003.

Since 2003, Scion has been its own distinct brand—but now, that’s changing. Effective as of August 2016, Scion has begun a transition back under the Toyota umbrella, where it had its genesis. Far from signifying hard times at Scion, Toyota says this move is the result of Scion’s success, of a response to changing consumer needs, and of a broader vision at Toyota itself. The company has released a full statement on the transition, and Get My Auto has released its own article, commenting on Scion brand to transitioning to Toyota.

“For a long time now, Scion has been the youngest-skewing auto brand in the United States,” says the Get My Auto statement. “Losing that youthful brand will obviously be a jolt to the auto industry, yet it may also be a shot in the arm for Toyota.”

Not that either Toyota nor Scion have been in dire straights, exactly. Jim Lentz, a founding Vice President of Scion, says “This isn’t a step backward for Scion; it’s a leap forward for Toyota. Scion has allowed us to fast track ideas that would have been challenging to test through the Toyota network. I was there when we established Scion and our goal was to make Toyota and our dealers stronger by learning how to better attract and engage young customers. I’m very proud because that’s exactly what we have accomplished.”

The point of Scion was always to be a place for Toyota to experiment with new products that might bring in younger customers. The numbers suggest that it’s been nothing but successful: More than a million Scions have been sold, 70 percent of them to people new to Toyotas and half of them to drivers under age 35.

“Today’s young vehicle owners still want vehicles that look sporty and are fun to drive, yet they also increasingly appreciate Toyota’s reputation for reliability,” explains Get My Auto. “Meanwhile, Toyota’s own cars have grown a lot more fun to drive and to handle—so in a way, Scion’s work is done, and its place is back with the mother ship.”
