Compass Events Focuses on Developing Future Leaders

At Compass Events, team training efforts cover more than the performance of specific tasks. The interactive marketing firm's managers also focus on developing future leaders who will help the company grow.

“We believe every associate can be a leader someday,” said Samantha, Compass Events’ director of operations. “It starts with an eagerness to learn.”

Samantha described the type of leadership skills the Compass Events’ team practices. “Listening is one of the fundamental skills we review,” she noted. “This isn’t just hearing what someone else is saying. It’s making the effort to understand both the words and the underlying message being conveyed. It’s about knowing how to probe deeper. For example, if a team member admits, ‘I’m unsure about this idea,’ what would you do? Would you accept it at face value? Would you still push the idea? Would you ask more questions to understand where the concern lies? Leaders ask more questions in order to identify reservations. Perhaps this person has a valid issue that could impact the project. Leaders need input to make informed decisions.”

Active listening is just one of the primary leadership skills taught within the firm. “We also encourage our team members to practice delegation,” Samantha shared. “This means they must learn to trust others’ abilities. Leaders empower their teams instead of giving orders. This is not as easy of a skill to master as one would think, especially when you’re responsible for outcomes. However, this is a collaborative office culture. Surrendering egos is part of the growth process.”

In addition to formalized training, Samantha emphasized that managers consistently demonstrate the type of leadership they wish their associates to emulate. “We don’t just talk about what leadership is,” she added. “We model the types of behaviors our team members should practice. I firmly believe a team’s attitude is a direct reflection of the leadership. If you are positive and supportive of your people, they will treat each other the same way.”

Compass Events’ Managers Note Recruiting Efforts Are Underway

Samantha announced that the Compass Events team will be growing over the next few months. “Our business forecast is strong,” she explained. “Therefore, we are beginning our talent recruitment efforts soon.”

There are several qualities the managers look for in applicants. They include positive attitudes and a thirst for knowledge. “We are looking for upbeat individuals who are eager to learn and advance their careers with us,” Samantha stated. “Candidates who are goal oriented and motivated are preferred.” Management offers a rigorous training program to help newcomers learn its unique marketing methodology and develop key business leadership skills.

“As I’ve stated, our company philosophy is not simply to hire people and fill roles,” Samantha concluded. “We want to build leaders who will enjoy successful careers with us. This is how our company’s future will grow.”
