May 5, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Rochester, MI, May 5, 2010 - ECommerce design and development agency, Brand Labs, has launched their first ongoing philanthropic initiative: One Laptop Per Child Per Week.
One Laptop Per Child launched in 2007 with the introduction of their specially designed laptop intended for distribution to the world's neediest children. The OLPC laptop, with its open-source operating system and low-cost, durable hardware has made an enormous impact on the world community in the intervening years, with hundreds of thousands of units already distributed to needy and grateful children all over the globe, including right here in the United States.
"It's a great program," explains Dane Downer, co-founder and Creative Director of Brand Labs. "As a company, we've been really lucky over the last several years and we felt like we needed a way to express our gratitude. The OLPC program is a perfect fit for us. As an eCommerce company, every single person at Brand Labs spends about 90% of their day in front of a computer screen, so we have a pretty solid understanding of the impact that computers can have on people's lives and livelihoods. The entire world is rapidly going online and the more people that join the Big Conversation, the better off we'll all be. Under Brand Labs' One Laptop Per Child Per Week program, the company will donate an OLPC laptop every week for the duration of the program.
"We haven't put an end date on the program because we don't want it to end," Downer continues. "Hopefully it'll just go on and on. We hope to do even more in the future and we're encouraging everyone we know to join in the effort... or an effort of their own choosing. That's why we didn't make the contribution contingent on a specified sales goal or something like that. We just want to do good for the sake of doing it."
