"I will be interested to learn how those who reap the financial benefits of 'Construction Defect' litigation will fare when they try to sell their properties, once having claimed in court filings that every aspect of their building was defective."

William L. Porter, President & Founder, Porter Law Group, Inc.

With over 25 years dedicated to law, Mr. Porter brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry and in particular to his areas of specialization, Construction Law and Labor and Employment Law. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in this specialization within law, Mr. Porter said:

"As a new attorney I was working for a firm with significant construction and employment law practice. I was an associate to an attorney with a heavy construction caseload. When he suddenly died, I had no choice but to step into his shoes. It was sink or swim, so I jumped right in. He also had prescheduled Construction seminars to teach. Because he had made the commitment, I felt obliged to begin teaching them. I had a fast learning curve and then I just stuck with it.

"As things developed over time, people started asking me to help them with various aspects internal to the construction industry, including drafting legislation and serving on Construction Industry Boards and panels. I ended up becoming quite involved in many different aspects of the field, including legislation, teaching contractors and subcontractors and starting construction industry associations."

Mr. Porter's practice encompasses representing private, state and federal construction claims before state and federal courts as well as in mediation and arbitration. Today, he regularly represents contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, developers and owners in complex multi-party construction litigation. His areas of expertise span from construction defects and construction collections, to mechanics’ liens, stop notices, bond claims, and prompt payment remedies, as well as construction contracts, competitive bidding and construction-related labor and employment matters.

As a thought-leader in his field, Mr. Porter has held numerous executive and leadership positions at prominent organizations in law and construction. He is the founding President of Region Builders, Inc. He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of Real Estate and Construction Networking (“RECON”) and currently serves on its National Board of Directors. He is a member of the AGC California Legal Advisory Committee and the ASA California Government Relations Committee and also serves on the Board of Directors and as legal counsel to the Sacramento Chapter of the ASA. He is a member of many other construction organizations.

His preeminence in the field gives Mr. Porter a unique vantage point from which to keep a close eye on prevailing trends in the industry. In particular, as members of AGC and ASA Legislative Committees, he plays a significant role in reviewing, monitoring, accepting, rejecting and suggesting changes to all pending California legislation of interest to both Direct Contractors and Subcontractors in California. He noted:

"I will be interested to learn how those who reap the financial benefits of 'Construction Defect' litigation will fare when they try to sell their properties, once having claimed in court filings that every aspect of their building was defective. Many of these claimants received payment for 'repairs,' yet no repairs are ever made. Later, as a legal precondition of sale, they must disclose that their plumbing, electrical, windows, siding, roof, etc. were all 'defective' and no repairs were ever made. I am interested to see whether they will ever report these unrepaired 'defects' and what the future for these claimants will bring."
