UPES IGNITE 2015 - A Great Success

To begin with, this year's IGNITE 2015 - The 4th Annual Techno Legal Management Fest witnessed over 100 events organized by three colleges of the University with participation crossing over 2000 internally and nationally.

IGNITE 2015 – The first thing that strikes you when you hear about this 4th annual techno-legal-management fest of University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, is a plethora of “out-of-the-box” events, which was celebrated with much pomp and vigour and attracted an overwhelming 2000 odd students participation, both internal and external. With over 100 events distributed among the three constituent colleges i.e. College of Engineering Studies, College of Legal Studies and College of Management & Economic Studies, IGNITE 2015 witnessed the best of the brains from all domains who came together on a common platform and exhibited unmatched talent.

The three day tech fest was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students as the various events showcased their “ignited” minds and brought out the best of the best. Their technical, legal and managerial skills were honed and a spirit of camaraderie was instilled in their young and growing minds, despite the competitive quotient being very high. Such a national level fest, helped the participants strengthen their bond and work together in a professional environment. Of the 100 events organised throughout the course of the event, 68 were from the engineering college, 12 from the legal department and 20 from the management college. Some of the most prominent colleges of this year’s three-day extravaganza were National Law School of India University- Bangalore (for the first time ever in any UPES event), Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University- Lucknow, Hidayatullah National Law University-  Raipur, Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, Amity Law School both Delhi and Lucknow, University of Delhi, RGNUL- Patiala, NLIU- Bhopal, Uttaranchal University, Dehradun Institute of Technology- Dehradun, Graphic Era, College of Engineering-Roorkee.

The inaugural ceremony was done by the Chief Guest Sh. Vijay Kr. Dhaundiyal- Director, Uttarakhand Space Application Centre who spoke about the importance and significance of knowledge, the sanctity of the various professions the students are in and how each one of us are striving to find the truth. Apart from the various competitive events, there were also certain guest lectures and workshops. A special lecture was delivered by Ms. Smiti Maini- Scientist, ISRO who is also an alumnus of UPES, from the class of 2010 in the aerospace department. She played a key role in the Mars mission and shared her views and learning in the industry, making people aware of the various nuances of aerospace. The next guest was Mr. S.P Mitra – DGM (Law), GAIL who gave an insight to the various functionalities of the industry. We also had Mr. Anil Kumar- an expert engineer and associate professor of J.P Solan who conducted workshop on bridge designing and SAP software. Finally, Mr. Deepak Bhatnagar- Director, Glokal University, Saharanpur, U.P and a metallurgical engineer from IIT-Roorkee, served as the special guest for the valedictory ceremony. He had worked under A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at TIFAC and he shared his work experience and invaluable views on IGNITE inspiring students to achieve more such endeavours.

Certain popular events from the engineering side were Auto Cadd which tested a participant’s imagination on the computer screen and top 3 winners being Sanjay Chaudhary, Gaurav Tuli and Surya from the host college; Robowars which tested a student’s technical acumen and how well versed was he with the mechanical structuring, robotics knowledge and weapon functionalities and top 3 winners being Pawan Deora and team from UPES, Rishabh Garg and team from UPES and Manas Upadhyay and team from Graphic Era University, Dehradun; Robo Soccer which as the name suggests determined the technical expertise of the participants who had designed robots to play a football match with top 3 winners being Kunal Bahuguna from the host college, Mayukh Chakraborti, again from the host college and Pawan Kumar from UIT and RoboRace which tested the participant’s skills and control on the robot, which were designed by themselves and top 3 winners being Akshit Jain from College of Engineering, Roorkee, Kshitij Mittal and Abhishek Kumar, both from the host college.

From the Management department, the events were Investor’s Dilemma which was a virtual trading game. The winners were Aman Maithani, Vivek Sharma and Lovish Gupta, all being from UPES and Scholar of the Year where the participant had to build a utility item from the scrap materials provided to him. The top 3 winners were Pooja Wadhwa and Rishabh Aggarwal; Sourav Sinha and Hirokjyoti Das and Bhavdeep Singh Kalra and Shashank Rai .

From the legal side, the events were Youth Parliament which is a simulation of the Indian parliament’s proceedings. The winners were Pranjul Pachori designated as High Commendation in Lok Sabha, Lokesh Aidsani designated as High Commendation from All India Parties Meet and Devjyoti Chakraborti designated as the Best Parliamentarian from Rajya Sabha, all being from UPES. Client Counselling was an event where a team of two who posed as lawyers had to advice the aggrieved client on various legal issues testing their legal acumen. The top 3 winners are NLU-Delhi comprising of Arjun Surjewala and Siddharth Priyadarshi, RMLNLU-Lucknow comprising of Kartikey Kulshreshtha and Geetika M.A and NLIU-Bhopal comprising of Priyam vada Mishra and Vinita Solanki.

In addition to the above events, for the first time in the four-year span of Ignite history, there was a “cultural eve” that took place on the second day, leaving the audience spellbound and yearning for more as the college student’s showcased exceptional musical, dramatic and dancing talents.

The chief faculty Co-ordinator of the event was Mr. A.J. Arun Jeyaprakash, from the aerospace department assisted by Mr. Praveen Jadhav- Faculty Convenor from CoMeS and Dr. Saroj Bohra- Faculty Convenor from CoLS. The fest was convened by Karmanya Kakkar, a final year Computer Science (CCVT) student assisted by Shivani Bhardwaj- co convenor from engineering, Aditya Trehan- co convenor from law and Rishabh Mahajan- co convenor from management. The overall student head of Event Management was Kanishk Mehta, a final year Chemical Engineering student.
