The "International Engine of the Year" Is Ford's 1.0-Liter EcoBoost Engine

Ford's new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine has been named the 2012 "International Engine of the Year", and will debut in America and at Bonner Springs Ford next year.

Ford Motor Company's new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine was named the 2012 "International Engine of the Year" by votes cast by 75 journalists from 35 different countries around the world. Ford's engine, which launched in the Ford Focus in Europe, earned the highest score in the 13-year history of the awards.

The 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine was also presented with two other awards from Engine Technology International magazine: "Best Engine Under 1.0-Liter" and "Best New Engine".

"We set the bar incredibly high when we set out to design this engine," said Ford vice president, Global Powertrain, Joe Bakaj. "We wanted to deliver eye-popping fuel economy, surprising performance, quietness and refinement - and all from a very small three-cylinder engine. The result is a game changer for gas engines globally."

The new Focus, equipped with the 1.0-liter engine, returns nearly 59 combined mpg, and is still able to generate 98 horsepower. Ford has pioneered many innovations in order offer such incredible fuel efficiency while still delivering fun-driving performance. In order to lower the temperature of exhaust and optimize fuel-to-air ratio, an exhaust manifold has been cast in the cylinder head. Another way the engine limits fuel consumption is through utilizing a cast iron block that warms the engine more quickly, and cuts the amount of "warm-up" energy required by 50 percent compared to that of a conventional aluminum block.

Judges recognized that this revolutionary engine could pave the way for the future of the automotive industry. "If downsizing is the way ahead, there is currently no better example than this," said U.K.-based journalist John Simister. "Same power as the naturally aspirated 1.6-liter engine it replaces, and much punchier to drive."

The 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine with make its debut in the U.S., Asia Pacific, and Africa in Ford Models starting next year.
