Rocking for Human Rights at the "Memphis in Poland" Festival
Rock for Human Rights brings great music and human rights awareness to the Memphis in Poland Festival June 12-17.
Sopot, Poland, June 13, 2017 (Newswire.com) - United for Human Rights (UHR) and its partner Rock for Human Rights (R4HR) have teamed up with the Polish-American Society of Memphis to bring human rights awareness and great rock and roll music to the Memphis in Poland Festival June 12-17 in the cities of Sopot and Gdansk, Poland.
Memphis is the cradle of rock, blues and soul—the city of Elvis and BB King. But it is also the city where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fought his final battle for human and civil rights. The motel where he was assassinated 50 years ago now stands as the National Civil Rights Museum — a monument to his legacy.
The Polish-American Society of Memphis, organizers of the program, saw Rock for Human Rights as the perfect fit for the festival and invited them to perform and carry out a series of human rights lectures to raise awareness on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For the Rock for Human Rights lectures at the festival, United for Human Rights translated The Story of Human Rights booklet into Polish.
"I got into music because I wanted to make the world a better place," says R4HR founder and lead singer Wil Seabrook, "and I wanted to inspire people the way that I was inspired by my heroes growing up. I wanted to figure out a really simple way to share information about human rights with people in a way that they would enjoy and understand and be able to use it in their lives."
After several successful tours in the U.S. and Asia, Rock for Human Rights is now sharing its music and passion for human rights with the thousands gathered in the Polish city of Sopot, the Baltic region's festival capital.
The group is performing a series of five concerts and reaching thousands more through human rights lectures during the week.
The final concert of the series will be held June 17 at Sopot's open-air amphitheatre, Opera Leśna.
The Sopot Museum is hosting an exhibition on Memphis blues, rock and roll, and soul. Festival educational seminars include music master classes led by the Memphis Mix musicians; a series of U.S. civil rights history lectures by Dr. Noelle Trent of the National Civil Rights Museum; and lectures on the the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by R4HR's Wil Seabrook.
The Polish-American Society of Memphis was established in 1978 with the mission to strengthen bonds and solidarity, provide mutual support with the people of Poland, and cultivate Polish traditions.
Rock for Human Rights brings human rights awareness to diverse audiences using the power of music, visual media and engaging public speakers. They partner with United for Human Rights, an international, not-for-profit organization dedicated to implementing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at local, regional, national and international levels.
