Congress has made these programs so complex that most people will have difficulty understanding them. We take the time to read the law and to explain it to people in plain English.
R. Eric Solem, Founder & Senior Partner, Solem, Harris, & McKinley, P.C.
With over 40 years dedicated to law, Mr. Solem brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular to his area of specialization, elder law matters, with an emphasis on drafting special needs trusts, as well as Medicaid and Medicare lien resolution. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in law, Mr. Solem recalled his time working with the Colorado Migrant Council:
"I was working in an office when I got acquainted with a number of legal aid lawyers. They were the ones who convinced me that the best way for me to help people who were poor and disabled was by becoming a lawyer."
As a thought-leader in his field, Mr. Solem keeps his eye on prevailing trends within elder law. In particular, he is paying close attention to the status of Medicaid and Medicare in Congress. He noted:
"Congress has made these programs so complex that most people will have difficulty understanding them. We take the time to read the law and to explain it to people in plain English."
All of Mr. Solem’s efforts over the years have been undertaken with the goal of providing the most compassionate and comprehensive legal assistance to those who need it most. To that end he helped establish a group called Case Coalition, a collaborative effort among settlement professionals to help other firms assist the significantly impaired. The group delivers consultation services to addresses clients' post-settlement needs and save law firms time, money, and valuable staff resources.
Mr. Solem is active in his community, participating in several charitable organizations and bar associations. He is the founder and past president of the Colorado Fund for People with Disabilities, the largest and longest-standing locally managed pooled trust in Colorado. He also served as co-chair of the Elder Law Committee of the Colorado Bar Association and is a current member of the Trust and Probate Section, as well as a long-time member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.
