Dr. Harry Shufflebarger is a Board Certified member of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He was educated at Emory University and underwent his internship and residency work at Grady Memorial Hospital. Prior to practicing full time at the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Dr. Shufflebarger practiced with pediatric spine expert, Dr. Robert Keiser, in Coral Gables. 20 years ago, Dr. Shufflebarger founded the prestigious Harms Study Group as an extension of his dedication to thorough, investigative research. The group is known in the health community as an international leader in pediatric spinal research which has had an impact on the overall care of young spinal patients all over the world. Dr. Shufflebarger himself served as the President of the North America and Scoliosis Research Society in 2000 and remains a member of the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America.
Dr. Shufflebarger’s academic contributions include 50 peer-reviewed articles regarding spinal health, 20 medical textbook chapters, and over 200 instances of abstract publications. He has taught as a visiting professor at more than 100 institutions worldwide and participated in more than 150 spinal classes and professional medical conferences.
Alongside his colleague Dr. Asghar, his use of Dashboard reporting with other American specialists led to the development of best practice guidelines in the spinal surgical field. This effort has resulted in shortened hospital stay periods following scoliosis surgery by 20%. During 2016, Dr. Shufflebarger received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Scoliosis Research Society for his innovative and influential progress on the treatment of pediatric spinal abnormalities.
