Even as he continued into junior high and high school, he continued with his studies and somehow managed to work in the fields to contribute to the family’s income. It was in those years that he began to see the oppression of the Hispanic people. He also saw the prejudice and the mistreatment of other minorities. First, he was determined to get an education and eventually help other minorities, especially the Chicano people. Back then, it was rare that a Chicano would come out of the barrio or for a migrant farm worker to go to college. Few even graduated high school.
My grandfather would pressure my dad to work in the fields. However, Dad was focused on getting an education. So, he’d do both regardless of how tired he’d get.”
