MedCBDx Discusses What the Farm Bill Update Means for the CBD Industry

Farm Bill Update

The passing of the Farm Bill update in 2018 has changed U.S. policy on hemp—and for the better. The Hemp Farming Act of 2018, which was written into the 2018 Farm Bill, removed hemp from the list of Schedule 1 controlled substances and set the stage for widespread hemp industrialization and greater production of hemp-derived products, including those that contain CBD.

What is hemp?

Hemp is a variety of cannabis plant. It is a different strain that comes from the same plant responsible for marijuana but has opposing characteristics in term of appearance, use, and chemical makeup. It contains very low levels of THC and does not produce the mind-altering effects inherent in marijuana. Hemp seeds and stalks have been used for years in everything from foods and beauty products to canvas and carpeting. Hemp is also the plant from which cannabidiol (CBD) is derived from.

What does the 2018 Farm Bill do?

Under the Hemp Farming Act, all hemp with less than 0.3 percent of THC is legalized in all 50 states, which means big things are coming for both hemp cultivation and CBD innovation. Hemp will now be federally regulated, with explicit allowances for interstate transfers of hemp-derived products.

Regulations under this new form of hemp legalization will be overseen by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In addition to the stipulation that all commercial hemp-derived products must contain less than 0.3 percent of THC—the psychoactive compound in marijuana—the FDA will also be involved in defining, and enforcing, public health goals for both hemp and CBD. This is good news for both consumers and the industry, as it will lead to greater consistency among hemp products.

An example of growing potential

MedCBDX, a company offering CBD-infused products, utilizes a unique and patented manufacturing process to create healthy CBD chewing gum and mints. The process allows them to incorporate either CBD oil or isolate into these consumer-friendly products. With the expansion of the Farm Bill, they plan to use their hemp oil patent to create additional CBD-infused food, supplements, and medicinal products.

These consumer-friendly products are designed to be ideal alternatives to the CBD pills, capsules, beverages, and gummies that infiltrate the CBD market and provide consumers with less effective relief.
