As our owner likes to say, 'we bridge the gap between drawings and reality.' My job is to work as a liaison between the Owner or Manager of the project, the technical people involved such as the Architect and other design trades, and the General Contractor or the Subcontractors.

Emily JN Smith has held various positions at a number of companies, including a Frame Stylist and Manager at an optometry practice and Account Manager at an insurance brokerage firm. She even owned her own travel business for a few years. But she has always been interested in design and has a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon.

“While looking for a new position, I included my resume on my LinkedIn page and was contacted by Jerry Valencia, the owner of Bridgeway Contracting, LLC,” Ms. Smith said. “He wanted to meet, and thought, after seeing my resume, that it would be ‘fun to build things together.’ Having come from a design background and moving to the project engineering side of things has been eye-opening, and completely exciting. I enjoy coming to work every day.”

Although she has only been in her position for two months, Ms. Smith said she has been completely immersed in her job and is learning more and taking on more responsibility every day. “As our owner likes to say, ‘we bridge the gap between drawings and reality,’” Ms. Smith said. “My job is to work as a liaison between the Owner or Manager of the project; the technical people involved such as the Architect and other design trades, and the General Contractor or the Subcontractors. I work to make sure our Project Manager is able to work and guide his team to work to the best of their ability. Beyond this, I make sure to track additional work orders, and all of the background aspects of a project.”

To stay on top of the many projects being worked on and to ensure few mistakes are made that could cost the company money, Ms. Smith uses her keen attention to detail, her organizational skills and her ability to multitask. She also stays engaged with all involved to ensure the project runs smoothly from start to completion.

“I love coming to work because of the challenge and the competition in this industry,” Ms. Smith said. “I am also fortunate to work for an unbelievable company that cares not just for their employees, but their employees’ families. It is inspiring what they will do. Bridgeway Contracting, LLC is making huge leaps in the industry. I look forward to growing with this company.”
