International Association of Women Honors Veldine Peake as a 2018-2019 Influencer of the Year

Veldine Peake, Online Training Development Specialist, Maryland Department of Human Services, is selected for her outstanding leadership and commitment within her profession

​​The International Association of Women (IAW) honors Veldine Peake as a 2018-2019 Influencer of the Year. She is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in entrepreneurship. The International Association of Women (IAW) is a global in-person and online networking platform with nearly one million members, 1000+ in person and virtual events, over 100 Local US based Chapters and International Chapters in several cities in China.

Veldine Peake, Online Training Development Specialist for the Maryland Department of Human Services, has always enjoyed talking to people and teaching and them how to do things. She parlayed those passions into a career when she started working as a trainer about 15 years ago. “My philosophy is like the old saying: ‘Give a man a fish he eats for a day; teach a man to fish he eats for a lifetime,’” she said. “My children inspired me to help those who need it most. Without knowledge and learning we as a society are unable to grow and be productive.”

Ms. Peake has been in her current position for almost two months. “My duties include building training modules for staff to increase their understanding of policies and procedures as well as meeting all other training needs they may have,” she said. A certified Project Manager as well as a certified Victim Advocate specializing in domestic violence, Ms. Peake also has a Master’s degree in Accounting and a Bachelor’s in Business Administration. “Fortunately, I am able to use all of these skills to budget training needs, implement new programs, and build and track the different projects needed to produce quality training materials,” she added.

Although Ms. Peake admits it can be challenging to create a training program that provides people with information they will actually remember, she strives to make her training classes impactful. “If I can make it fun and present it in a way they can incorporate the information into their daily work lives, people are more likely to remember the material and look forward to learning more,” she said. “The rewarding part is when someone approaches me and says, ‘I really enjoyed this training and can start using the info right away.’"

In addition to continuing to teach and train others, Ms. Peake also plans to continue her expand her own knowledge. “There is so much I don't know; therefore, my future goals include continuing my education,” she added. “I'm not quite sure what I want to be when I grow up, so whatever strikes my fancy will become my next educational endeavor.”
