Hot Dogging at the 8th Annual Unleashed by Petco™ Surf City Surf Dog® Competition
Huntington Beach, CA , August 31, 2016 (Newswire.com) - The world’s best surfing dogs will once again gather in Surf City USA for the 8th Annual Unleashed by Petco, Surf City Surf Dog competition on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Huntington Dog Beach. More than 70 pawticipants and international surfurs will be competing for barking rights to claim the top dog honor, taking home the trophy in the second event of the Double Dog Dare Surf Dog two-part series.
“We are so proud of how the sport of dog surfing has evolved over the last 11 years. This year, we have partnered with local businesses, the community and most importantly, great charities to create a weekend of family-friendly fun and fund-raising! The event puts a smile on everyone’s face and really gets the crowd connected in the tail-wagging fun,” said event organizer Lisa Scolman of Book That Event, LLC.
This year’s Surf City Surf Dog event has some added international flair. Australian Dog Behavior Specialist and surfer, Chris De Aboitiz will be flying to the US for the entire month of September to not only train a rescue pup from SoCal Golden Retriever Rescue (SCGRR), but also to compete in the competition with his new surfur friend. The dog will be available for adoption and, if all goes according to plan, will be adopted during the event.
“It is great to be fostering a dog in Southern California with the SCGRR. I’m looking forward to bonding with my new dog mate and demonstrating how to understand dog behavior, and how to provide exercise and structure through outdoor adventures. I’m really stoked to be in the USA participating in Surf City Surf Dog,” said Chris.
The Surf City Surf Dog Competition weekend kicks off on Friday, September 23rd, with an Opening Ceremony and Press Conference at Rainwater Gallery & Events Center in Downtown Huntington Beach. A Surf Dog Photo Exhibit will be on display at the gallery with partial proceeds benefiting Surf City Surf Dog’s Official Charity Partners. On Saturday, September 24th, Pirate Coast Paddle Company at Newport Dunes hosts “SUP with Your Pup,” with special guest, Chris de Aboitiz of SUP Dog Oz. Dogs and their owners will enjoy discounted rates on Stand Up Paddleboard rentals as well as mentoring and “6 Steps to SUP with Your Dog,” with Chris. Sunday, September 25th is the big day! The Unleashed by Petco Surf City Surf Dog Competition starts at 8:00 am and ends at 3:00 pm. In addition to the surf competition, there will be a SurFUR Expo with vendors on the sand, dog adoptions, and food trucks. Waggle, a new media company from Broadway Video focused on pets and animals that gives users tools for maintaining a healthy and social lifestyle with their dogs, will be livestreaming the event from their mobile application and Facebook page.
Winners will be scored by World Surf League Judges based upon the length of their ride, difficulty of wave and maneuvers. Prizes will be awarded to the top dogs; however, all dogs will receive a commemorative participation medal.
