Fleeing the Country From Student Loans Seems Extreme, But AFBC Says It's Some Borrowers' Extreme Reality

White Airplane Flying High

Fleeing the country seems extreme for most people and, depending on their living situation, may be rather difficult too. But for the people that do flee to another country, it's because they feel they have no other choice. American Financial Benefits Center (AFBC), a document preparation service company that helps struggling borrowers apply for federal repayment programs, says there's a big problem going on if student loan borrowers are contemplating leaving the country because they cannot afford student loan repayment.

"Actually leaving the country because of student loan debt, not just thinking about it, is definitely extreme," said Sara Molina, manager at AFBC. But more stories are coming to the surface about the very real choice borrowers felt they had to make. Working multiple jobs -- whatever jobs they can get because they don't have the experience for upper-level jobs or they're "overqualified" because of their degree -- isn't cutting it for many borrowers to afford a quality standard of living, let alone repayment. In extreme cases, where debt collectors are calling multiple times a day and wage garnishment is sapping already-limited resources, borrowers may flee to other countries where they can teach English because of their degree.

From the stories, most of those fleeing don't initially intend to stay out of the country that long, but fear of what will happen when they return keeps them from doing so. AFBC has been there for thousands of student loan borrowers struggling with repayment to help them with applying for federal income-driven repayment programs that have potentially lowered their monthly payments and gotten them on track for student loan forgiveness after 20-25 years of remaining in the program. Perhaps if knowledge about these repayment programs was more widespread and there were more options to help out private loan borrowers, they wouldn't be stuck with such extreme circumstances. "We believe student loan repayment shouldn't have to be a struggle. That's why we're so dedicated to helping our clients apply for repayment programs and assisting with the yearly recertification process," said Molina.
