With 20 years dedicated to medicine, Dr. Cunningham brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular, to his areas of expertise, neuropsychiatry and behavioral neurology. When asked why he decided to pursue this specialization in medicine, Dr. Cunningham said:
"My interest in neuropsychiatry started very early in my training. I became intrigued by the underlying neurobiological substrates of mental illness. As an undergraduate neuroscientist, I studied the kindling phenomenon – which served as an experimental model for learning and memory as well as seizure disorders and recurrent psychiatric conditions."
As a thought-leader in his industry, Dr. Cunningham is widely renowned for his cutting-edge research in psychiatry, neurology, and neurosurgery. While completing his residency, he conducted neuroscience research in the laboratory of Dr. Francine Benes which focused on the study of the corticolimbic circuitry of psychopathology. Today, Dr. Cunningham directs the Laboratory for Neural Reconstruction, which studies emotional circuitry and psychopathology via precision engraftment of genetically engineered neural cells. There, he and his team have pioneered the use of therapeutic stem cells for the study and potential treatment of neuropsychiatric diseases by modulating or reconstructing the corticolimbic system using neural grafting techniques.
His prominence as both a researcher and a practicing psychiatrist gives Dr. Cunningham a unique vantage point from which to follow prevailing trends in psychiatry. Addiction, for example, is a special area of interest, the treatment of which is amenable to modulating the reward system using strategic stem cell engraftment. Dr. Cunningham is the Executive Director of the Asniya, Inc. cross-cultural training program for medical students, the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board at Coretech Holdings in St. Louis, MO as well as the Chair of the Scientific Program Committee of the American Neuropsychiatric Association where he is also a Council Member.
