Mark J. Raden, M.D., Chairman of Radiology, Staten Island University Hospital, Northwell | Medical Director & Director of Neuroradiology, Verrazano Radiology

With nearly 30 years dedicated to medicine, Dr. Raden brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry and, in particular, to his areas of expertise, vascular radiology, interventional radiology, and neuroradiology. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in this specialty, Dr. Raden said:

"Radiology is a cutting-edge field where innovations were taking place every year. The field joined my interests in performing procedures with an intimate knowledge of human anatomy and allowed me to see patients with a vast array of medical problems. Radiology touches on every aspect of a human being's health, and affords the opportunity to diagnose, intervene and treat people as a whole."

Before becoming Medical Director at Verrazano Radiology, Dr. Raden previously served as Section Chief of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, in which minimally invasive procedures, such as biopsies, angiograms, and interventional techniques are performed using image guidance. Now serving as Chairman of the Radiology Department, Dr. Raden is committed to providing world-class imaging to his patients with high quality, compassionate and convenient radiology services. His work focuses on imaging of the central nervous system, brain, and spine and works in close collaboration with local neurologists, neurosurgeons and otolaryngology specialists to provide the best possible care to his patients.

As a thought-leader in his specialty, Dr. Raden keeps a close eye on prevailing trends in his specialty. Through his work with a broad range of subspecialists and using his business acumen and background, he was able to bring the latest technological developments to Staten Island. He noted:

"I care about the borough I live in and the people I serve. In radiology, we're very dependent on high-held technology. I view my role as important in bringing the most cutting-edge diagnostic capabilities and therapies to my patients. No one should have to leave our facilities to get access to what used to only be available in the major cities and academic centers. As an example, we have brought the newest 'race against time' methods of treating acute stroke patients, with early diagnosis and treatment helping to restore function. The latest tomographic methods to assist in the early detection of breast cancer are here. We are treating cancer patients who have focal metastatic lesions in the liver using the latest interventional methods of targeted chemotherapy. Our lung cancer screening program is one of the best at screening the at-risk population. Our equipment not only includes the most advanced 3T technology and rapid cardiac CT scanners, but we also have the most advanced Open MRI for claustrophobic patients."

Dr. Raden is a Senior Member of the American Society of Neuroradiology and a proud member of the Radiology Society of North America, the American College of Radiology, and the Association of University Radiologists. Well respected among his peers, he also runs the Neuroradiology teaching section at Staten Island University Hospital and frequently lectures and offers conferences for his colleagues and resident trainees. Dr. Raden was also elected by his colleagues to be the president of his hospital’s medical and dental staff.
