Dr. Laura J. Varich Has Been Recognized Among the Top in Her Industry by the Expert Network©

The Expert Network celebrates its newest member, Dr. Laura J. Varich

Dr. Laura J. Varich, Medical Director, Pediatric Radiology, Florida Hospital System, has joined The Expert Network, an invitation only service for distinguished professionals. Varich has been chosen as a Distinguished Doctor® based on peer reviews and ratings, numerous recognitions, and accomplishments achieved throughout her career.

Varich outshines others in her field due to her extensive educational background, recognitions, and dedication to her patients. She earned her medical degree from the University of California Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento and served her internship and residency at the University of California San Diego Medical Center. She completed her fellowship at Children’s Hospital Boston and is board certified.

"Given our size, what we do really affects a lot of the population here in central Florida. And there are a huge number of images taken across our network. But because of the electronic capability of transmitting images, the images can now all be read by specialists at any site, rather than at one particular site. So since you can have a specialist reading the image from any location basically 24 hours a day, it's a really great benefit for patients to be able to have real specialists reading their films because that can make all the difference."

With 22 years dedicated to medicine, Varich brings a wealth of knowledge to her industry and, in particular, to her area of expertise in pediatric radiology. When asked how she believes her work is affecting her patients, Varich said:

"Given our size, what we do really affects a lot of the population here in central Florida. And there are a huge number of images taken across our network. But because of the electronic capability of transmitting images, the images can now all be read by specialists at any site, rather than at one particular site. So since you can have a specialist reading the image from any location basically 24 hours a day, it's a really great benefit for patients to be able to have real specialists reading their films because that can make all the difference."

As a leader in her industry, Varich knows that her impact can be very broad if she is able to design systems that are best-in-class and that can be widely implemented. But she also understand the risks presented by new technologies and increased testing. So she is concentrating resources on mitigating those risks. She noted:

"The biggest thing that I have focused on, and I think it's one of the most important things we're doing right now in pediatric radiology, is working on the safety of imaging. There is a lot of information in the press and the media about radiation and the effects of radiation on children. And we are trying actively to reduce the radiation dose for our imaging studies in our pediatric patients, which is really important. We also want to reduce the amount of anesthesia that we need for our young patients. If patients need long exams, they will sometimes require anesthesia. And it has been shown that that can possibly cause some damage. So I think that even if parents don't know what's going on and haven't heard about some of this stuff, we always need to make sure that all of our patients are imaged in the safest way possible."

Varich is currently the Medical Director of Pediatric Imaging for the Florida Hospital System, a network of twelve hospitals and five outpatient locations. She is also a member of the Society of Pediatric Radiology and the American College of Radiology.
