"We in the developed world have an ethical responsibility to partner with colleagues in developing country to help improve the management and cure of children with cancer in the majority of the world."

Jonathan Finlay, MB, ChB, FRCP, Director, Department of Neuro-Oncology, Nationwide Children's Hospital

With over 40 years dedicated to medicine, Dr. Finlay brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular, to his area of expertise, pediatric oncology. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Finlay said:

"When I was fifteen, I lost a sister to systemic lupus, an autoimmune disease. She took ill when I was eight, and I lived and worked through that with her for seven years. That had a significant impact on my desire to become a doctor. For me, that was the beginning of a lifelong pursuit."

As a thought-leader in his field, Dr. Finlay has authored or co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and over 80 review articles and book chapters. He has also lectured and presented his work at conferences throughout the world. Recent honors include inclusion in Best Doctors Inc.’s Best Doctors in America, a citation in Columbus Monthly’s Top Doctors, and inclusion in Castle Connolly’s America’s Top Doctors for Cancer.

Dr. Finlay notes the tremendous improvements that have been made in the treatment of children with cancer over the past few decades. But with an eye toward the future, he knows that there is much work to be done in developing countries. At this time, he is engaged with organizing conferences in Asia and South America and is focused on improving outcomes for children all over the world. He noted:

"The progress in the treatment of children with cancer in general has been nothing short of phenomenal over the last fifty years; we now expect over 80% of children diagnosed with cancer to be cured. But before we grow too complacent, it is important to remember that this statistic only applies to the 15% of children living in the developed, high-income countries of the world; for the remaining 85%, the cure rate remains dismal, especially although certainly not exclusively for children with brain cancer. We in the developed world have an ethical responsibility to partner with colleagues in developing country to help improve the management and cure of children with cancer in the majority of the world."

Dr. Finlay currently practices at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where he is the Director of the Neuro-Oncology Program. Previously, he was the Director of the Neural Tumors Program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and served as Professor of Pediatrics, Neurology & Neurological Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. Between 1982 and 2003, he held faculty positions in Pediatric Oncology at Stanford University (1980-1982), University of Wisconsin-Madison (1982-1987), University of Pennsylvania (1987-1989), Cornell University/Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (1989-1993) and New York University (1997-2003).
