It used to be that in a majority of cases, mothers would get primary custody of the children because they were seen as more nurturing. Today, that bias has gone away, and increasingly we are seeing equal parenting time being awarded in custody cases. It is also becoming harder for a mother to get maintenance, or alimony, in a divorce whereas that used to be the standard.

With over 35 years of experience, Ms. Garnholz brings a wealth of knowledge to her industry, and in particular to her areas of specialization, family law, probate law, and estate planning. When asked why she decided to pursue a career in family law, Ms. Garnholz said:

"I saw from a young age the turmoil that families go through during stressful breakups and I felt like this was an area of the law where I could make the most difference. I really like working with people, and I'm good at helping them work through stress."

As a thought-leader in her field, it is essential that Ms. Garnholz keeps her eye on prevailing trends in family law, probate law, and estate planning. In recent years she has been paying close attention to the changed perspective of the court with respect to father’s rights in Missouri divorce cases. She noted:

"It used to be that in a majority of cases, mothers would get primary custody of the children because they were seen as more nurturing. Today, that bias has gone away, and increasingly we are seeing equal parenting time being awarded in custody cases. It is also becoming harder for a mother to get maintenance, or alimony, in a divorce whereas that used to be the standard."

Outside of her thriving practice, Ms. Garnholz is actively involved in her community. She currently serves as a part-time Provisional Judge for the City of Clayton Municipal Court and was a Provisional Judge for the St. Louis County Municipal Court from 2007 to 2017. She was appointed and is currently serving as Chair of the City of Clayton Charter Advisory Task Force. She served as Alderman of the City of Clayton from 2007 until 2017, serving on numerous city boards and commissions, including the Clayton Parks and Recreation Commission and the Economic Development Advisory Committee. In 2016, Ms. Garnholz was a presenter and panelist at the 21st Century Leadership Academy, a part of the Women and Public Leadership Program at the University of Missouri at St. Louis, to speak about her experience as a lawyer, judge, and elected official. She has also been a presenter for the past several years at the Missouri Bar Family Law Conference, a statewide meeting of Family Law Professionals.
