The Expert Network celebrates its newest member, Attorney Chris Kilgore

Chris Kilgore, Managing Member, Kilgore | McCown, has joined The Expert Network, an invitation only service for distinguished professionals. Mr. Kilgore has been chosen as a Distinguished Lawyer™ based on peer reviews and ratings, dozens of recognitions, and accomplishments achieved throughout his career.

Mr. Kilgore outshines others in his field due to his extensive educational background, career longevity, and numerous awards and recognitions. He received his law degree from the University of Houston and his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of the State of New York. He also has his FAA Airline Transport Pilot license (ATP) and is a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI). Mr. Kilgore has been “A.V.” Preeminent Rated by Martindale Hubble®, been named a Texas Super Lawyer, to the National Association of Distinguished Counsel – Nation’s Top 1%, and to Texas Monthly's Texas Top Attorneys, and he received the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University' Faculty of the Year Award.

"The aviation litigation business is slowing down dramatically, and that is, in part, a result of low insurance coverage. Today, when a plane crashes - at least a general aviation aircraft - you're looking at liability limits typically around $100,000 per seat. Consequently, we have seen significant shrinkage in the Aviation Bar. Many attorneys, especially the younger ones, have moved on to other areas of law. Dallas has been home to a fairly large aviation litigation community but lately it's become quite a bit smaller."

Chris Kilgore, Managing Member, Kilgore | McCown

With nearly 30 years dedicated to law, Mr. Kilgore brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular to his area of specialization, aviation litigation. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in law, Mr. Kilgore said:

"I was a professional pilot for fifteen years before I went to law school so my career in law is a natural extension of my previous career."

Mr. Kilgore’s eclectic background – which includes experience as a military officer, professional pilot, construction project manager, draftsman, safety professional, and educator – has allowed him to litigate matters spanning a wide range of issues, including those involving metallurgy, mechanics, electronics, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, design, and pharmacology. This has made him a successful and efficient legal advocate who is able to approach each case with a unique perspective.

As a thought-leader in his industry, Mr. Kilgore is highly regarded as an authority on aviation law. He has published several cases in influential law journals and is the author of the 1999 Aviation Law Supplement to Texas Torts. Mr. Kilgore also lectures widely on a range of topics in the industry, and serves as an adjunct faculty member at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Fort Worth campus, where he has taught aviation law and insurance courses since 1997. Further, Mr. Kilgore serves on the Governing Board of the Alliance for Innovation and Infrastructure, a Washington D.C. based independent educational organization and think-tank dedicated to national infrastructure needs.

His prominence in the field gives Mr. Kilgore a unique vantage point from which to follow prevailing trends in aviation law. In particular, he laments the decline of the field, which he notes stems from a decrease in insurance coverage among aviation companies. He noted:

"The aviation litigation business is slowing down dramatically, and that is, in part, a result of low insurance coverage. Today, when a plane crashes – at least a general aviation aircraft – you're looking at liability limits typically around $100,000 per seat. Consequently, we have seen significant shrinkage in the Aviation Bar. Many attorneys, especially  the younger ones, have moved on to other areas of law. Dallas has been home to a fairly large aviation litigation community but lately it's become quite a bit smaller."

Mr. Kilgore currently serves as a member of the State Bar of Texas. He is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court; United States Court of Federal Claims; United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit; United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit; United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit; United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit; and all Federal District Courts in Texas.
