13-Year Old "Races" Into Victory Lane

NASCAR hopeful, Sam Mayer, drives into speedway record books

March 4th was opening day at the famed racing venue, Greenville-Pickens Speedway, when 13-year old, Sam Mayer, drove his winning Limited Late Model race car, #41, across the finish line and into Victory Lane.  After this win, the speedy young driver entered the speedway record books as the youngest late model race winner – ever!

Sam, son of Indy Car and Grand Am driver, Scott Mayer, developed the racing bug at the very young age of 4.  Now, at the age of 13, it is obvious that Sam is committed to developing his skills through a variety of racing levels as he strives to reach his ultimate goal. The younger Mayer hopes to follow in his father’s footsteps with one goal in mind -- to reach the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series.

"Sam drove a very calculated and heady race for a 13-year old kid, first time in a late model."

Lorin Ranier, Driver Development Consultant

Sam’s racing coach, Lee McCall, spoke about this young driver’s first-ever win in the late model cars series driving for his Hawk McCall Motorsports Team, “You don’t ever expect a 13-year old to go out and win their first time.  Our first goal is to finish every lap and second is to win.  This will be a building year.”

“Sam drove a very calculated and heady race for a 13-year old kid, first time in a late model," states Driver Development Consultant, Lorin Ranier.  “He has a bright future.”

It is fitting that Sam Mayer will forever remain in the record books at this track, since it was on July 4, 1946, that NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. promoted the first stock car race at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.  Adding to the fame, between 1951 and 1971 Richard Petty had six wins and the ever-popular David Pearson won four races at this track.  Earnhardt family racing patriarch, Ralph Earnhardt, father to son Dale and grandfather to Dale Earnhardt, Jr., won multiple races at this track in the mid-sixties, adding to the rich history of famous drivers who loved to win at this track.
