Sports Inc. 2000 Takes on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge for Charity

After being nominated for the Ice Bucket Challenge by another office, the Sports Inc. 2000 team doused themselves with iced water and donated to the cause, finding the experience to be extremely rewarding.

“We were proud to make our Ice Bucket Challenge video,” said Paul, the firm’s director. “It’s a great cause that we were happy to donate to and support. Despite being surprised by just how cold it was, we all had a lot of fun doing it.”

The Ice Bucket Challenge is a recent internet phenomenon that calls on people to raise awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease, meaning it causes the progress loss of neurological function. This disease affects tens of thousands of Americans and is sadly always fatal.

Participants in the Ice Bucket Challenge must make a video of themselves dumping a bucket of ice water over their head. In the video, they nominate several friends to complete the challenge next. Initially people were told to either donate to fighting ALS or completing the challenge; however, shortly after the sensation began, it became popular for participants to both donate and dump ice over their heads. While the challenge started earlier in the year, its meteoric rise in popularity started in July of 2014.

So far, since late July, nearly $100 million has been raised for ALS. This is an enormous increase over the $2.7 million raised during the same period last year. Part of the reason this movement became so viral is because it combines simplicity with fun and charity; the fact that only a cell phone camera and a bucket of ice water are needed to participate have made it extremely accessible.

Sports Inc. 2000 Explains the Significance of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

According to Paul, the ice Bucket Challenge is important for two reasons: it is a great example of creative fundraising, and it has helped spur a rise in charity. In terms of the increase in donations over such a short period of time, the Ice Bucket Challenge is one of the most financially successful charity campaigns ever. It is a perfect example of how creativity, simplicity, and accessibility can be combined to have a really positive effect. “It was successful for a number of reasons” explained Paul. “But perhaps the most unique is the opportunity for each participant to express him or herself. That’s something you don’t see with more traditional social media campaigns.”

Interestingly, ALS is not the only cause to receive an increase in donations. In fact, charitable contributions this summer have been 50% higher across the board compared to previous years. This is part of the power of the Ice Bucket Challenge; it has put charity on the minds of millions of people.
