With Third Commissary Project, KBE Building Corp. Helping Feed and Clothe Military Families in Three States

Philanthropic construction firm tapped to renovate NEX store in Memphis

For KBE Building Corp., good things come in threes: the $300 million commercial construction firm was chosen to renovate its third Department of Defense commissary/Navy Exchange project on the East Coast.

KBE will serve as General Contractor for renovations to the main store at the Navy Exchange located in Memphis, Tennessee. The $2.5 million project will comprise the interior renovation of 49,700 square feet of retail space, plus the conversion of 3,625 square feet of storage space to retail space.

"Thanks to this third project, commissaries and Navy Exchanges have become a cornerstone of our federal projects. We're making a positive impression with the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA), the Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM), and other organizations."

Mike Kolakowski, KBE principal owner and CEO

After the renovation, the Navy Exchange will continue to sell quality goods and services to military members, retirees, and their families.

“Thanks to this third project, commissaries and Navy Exchanges have become a cornerstone of our federal projects,” said KBE President and principal owner Mike Kolakowski. “We’re making a positive impression with the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA), the Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM), and other organizations.”

In Maryland, KBE just completed construction of the new $27 million, 132,000-square-foot Joint Commissary and Navy Exchange in Annapolis. KBE finished construction for Connecticut’s $14.5 million, 57,000-square-foot Groton (New London) Commissary in February.

Known for safety and efficiency, KBE builds its commissaries and exchanges on time and on budget. But the firm also prioritizes sustainability. The Joint Commissary and Navy Exchange in Annapolis is pursuing LEED Silver certification, meeting the stringent certification criteria with a number of sustainable measures, including its unique process for conserving onsite rainwater.

“Government-owned projects have become a strong market for us, especially in Maryland,” said Robert Baumann, VP of Field Operations for KBE’s Mid-Atlantic regional office. “But it’s always a pleasure to work for the benefit of the military -- whether it’s through construction or through our charitable giving program, 50 Ways to Make a Difference.”

Since 2009, KBE associates have donated more than $1.2 million and 5,000 volunteer hours to charitable organizations in Connecticut and Maryland.
