Waco's First Adventure Race, Human Race Waco Raises $32K for Care Net

Waco's first adventure race in April 2013 in Cameron Park attracted nearly 250 participants some new to the sport for Central Texas. Thousands of dollars raised were benefit Care Net.

Care Net Pregnancy Center of Central Texas today announced its annual 5K "Walk for Life" fundraiser, which was expanded and renamed Human Race Waco, raised $32,000. The date for next year's race is April 26, 2014.

Waco's first adventure race attracted 274 racers. It included a 5K run/walk, a sprint adventure race, an extreme sprint adventure race and a dri-tri. Half of the racers participated in the 5K, one-quarter in the dry-tri and one-quarter in the adventure races.

"Most of the racers had never participated in an adventure race, which is what we wanted," said Deborah McGregor, Care Net's chief executive officer. "They are now introduced to the sport, and they are hooked."

One young participant started the race holding her favorite stuffed animal, and she crossed the race with it in hand.

"We loved it," said Ellie Keeling, an adventure racer. "We had never done adventure racing. We had done a triathlon, but this was much more fun."

The event was held April 27, 2013 in Waco's Cameron Park. Sponsors included Outdoor Waco, Providence Health Care, Summit Dental, Texas Professional Exteriors, Capstone Mechanical, Gerald Cox Pediatric Dentistry, Eastside Animal Hospital, Capstone Mechanical, Mark and Sheri Rister, Texas Professional Exteriors, Festive Occasions, Dr. Pepper, Amanda Trotter DDS, Bicycles Outback and Terry and Jo's Food for Thought.

Hosted by Care Net Pregnancy Center of Central Texas, the annual event helps to serve 5,000+ women and children who are involved in a crisis pregnancy each year. Care Net assists young women with free services, including pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, parenting classes and counseling. The event was known as Care Net's "Walk for Life," but in 2013 broadened the event to include adventure racing
