Urban Focus Attends Conferences to Network, Build Amity

The Urban Focus team frequently attends industry conferences of various types to interact with other top performers and boost morale. The firm's director of operations discussed a few ways to get even more benefits out of such gatherings.

Company travel, particularly to industry conferences, is a great way to bring team members closer while also making beneficial professional contacts. The leadership team at Urban Focus is committed to gaining every possible benefit from attending conferences. As Lauren, the company’s director of operations, explained, “We’re always eager to broaden our horizons, both personally and professionally. Business travel of all kinds can certainly aid in such pursuits, but I find industry conferences to be the optimal settings for gaining new insights while also forging relationships that can help our company in unexpected ways.”

The director continued, “The interactions you have at an industry conference really can’t be matched in any other context. Along with learning best practices and engaging with other high achievers from across the industry, our team members get to hear inspiring speeches from some of the most accomplished leaders in the world. I would really have a hard time thinking of any drawbacks to these types of corporate excursions.”

"You have to approach these crowded and hectic gatherings in a particular way. They require planning for what you'll do before, during, and after the scheduled events have taken place."

Urban Focus’s Director of Operations Shares Tips for Maximizing the Conference Experience

Lauren shared her unique and effective strategies for getting the most value out of a trip to an industry conference. As she explained, “You have to approach these crowded and hectic gatherings in a particular way. They require planning for what you’ll do before, during, and after the scheduled events have taken place.”

Doing the appropriate homework is an essential first step when preparing to go to a conference. “Find out who will be in attendance, and how they might offer value to your company,” added the director. “Having as much knowledge as possible about people’s backgrounds and their company’s current operations will help you get some of the initial and often awkward small talk out of the way and address more important concerns out of the gate

While some preliminary knowledge is always helpful, Lauren also recommends a specific strategy when it comes to interacting with new contacts in a packed event hall. “I always encourage our team members to ask open-ended questions when making connections,” she said. “You won’t get very far along if you only ask questions that draw simple yes or no responses. This is also a good approach because it allows the other person to have control of the conversation. He or she will most likely remember you as someone who really cared, and will be that much more likely to follow up somewhere down the line.”
