"The Vehicle Safety Railroad Crossing": Senses the Presence of a Vehicle in the Crossing, Stops Train and Prevents Collisions

Being struck by a train almost always means death for the motorist, but that can often be just the beginning of a larger disaster as the locomotive and cars of the train, one after another, derail. The Vehicle Safety Railroad Crossing equips the nation’s railroad crossings with a unique technological innovation designed to save lives and property: a system that would sense the presence of a motor vehicle in the crossing as a train approaches and acts to alert the train’s engineer and brakeman, and automatically apply the trains brakes.

Vehicle Safety Railroad Crossing consists of a form of scale type tram crossings that will trip the mechanism to stop a train from colliding with a vehicle. The system has affordably installed scales under the ramps at each railroad crossing. The scales detect the vehicle’s weight that is lingering too long on the tracks at the crossing. When tripped, the system sends an alert to the approaching train that a vehicle is stopped on the tracks. The train’s engineer or brakeman can then stop the train before a collision occurs or the safety trigger will trip a switch applying the train’s brakes to stop automatically. Electrical conduit would be used for the scales and the tripping switch at those crossings which currently have a tripping mechanism for the gates and lights, however— at those crossings without electrical current—solar panels serve to supply power to the scales, devices and switches. Televised test marketing has recently been completed indicating strong consumer interest in the Vehicle Safety Railroad Crossing.

The Patent Pending Vehicle Safety Railroad Crossing was invented by Frank Bartolotti of Millbrook, NY who said, “I witnessed a train collide with a vehicle around February 20th, 2015 in Valhalla, NY.  The driver of the Jeep was stuck on the tracks between the gates or crossing arms He died along with five people on the train. My invention will work to alert the train’s engineer or brakeman and automatically trip the brake switch, thereby preventing collisions. It will work and it will save lives!”
