NEW YORK, NY - On May 31st, 2011, The Tank -- the 8-year-old non-profit venue for performing arts -- will be on the move. After 2 ½ years at the 45th Street Theater, its landlord is doubling the rent. While The Tank continues to watch its programming expand and audience grow during tough economic times, the rent increase is too steep.

The Tank is no stranger to moving. Its original home was on West 42nd Street for two years until a block-wide demolition made room for new luxury condominiums. Its second home for 2 ½ years on Church Street in Tribeca had to be vacated on short notice after a massive sewage eruption flooded the basement. Partnerships with chashama and DCTV provided interim venues. And through it all, The Tank's community of artists, volunteers and audience have become accustomed to the nomadic life.

"It's never ideal to ask your community to move," commented Tank Board President Justin Krebs. "But it's not like we haven't done this before. We're committed to continuing our programming in Manhattan...however, I can't tell you where just yet."

The Tank is searching for a long-term home beginning in the fall and is in negotiations with several prospective spaces on the west side of Manhattan. Over the summer, The Tank will move its programming to partner venues in order to ensure that creative, risk-taking, multi-disciplinary work has a home in the heart of Manhattan.

The Tank follows a series of other independent theaters who have had to seek new homes recently. The SoHo Think Tank recently lost its longtime home but fortunately found a new venue. The long-running Under St. Marks is in jeopardy. And the closure of 45 Bleecker left numerous shows homeless.

The Tank is supporting its community; and turning to it as well -- seeking suggestions for where The Tank should move next. They are looking for at least a 74-seat venue, in Manhattan, with limited residential neighbors and including wheelchair accessibility.
