The Future of Dentistry for Anxious Patients May No Longer Include Traditional Sedation Methods
Rocklin, CA, October 28, 2014 (Newswire.com) - There has been a recent finding of a second sleep node in the brain. Doctoral manipulation of the sleep center, through neurological medication, can enact sedation in mammals enough to potentially perform the same procedures as those which require traditional sedation methods. This innovation in neuroscience is now sweeping the medical world as considerations for its use, and methodologies for manipulation, are being discussed and tested. The intent to revolutionize medical sedation comes from the desire to eliminate the grogginess of some treatments and, ultimately, the need for medication whatsoever. Elements from the more alternative methods of neurological manipulation such as sense therapy and acupuncture are being considered viable and evaluated through clinical trials to determine the least invasive ways to stimulate sedation for patients – especially those who are being sedated on the basis of anxiety. Further, the medical community endeavors to eventually have the ability to put a patient under deep sedation without risk of drowsiness and have the ability to retract the sedative effects and return the person to alertness at will – a current impossibility for patients under deep sedation or anesthesia.
Dr. Travis Titlow, of Five Star Dental Care in Rocklin, CA, has used traditional sedation methods throughout his years of experience in dentistry. Methods include medicated deep sedation or complete anesthesia, IV-induced moderate sedation, or orally-induced or inhaled mild to moderate sedation. Dr. Titlow makes it his practice to keep a majority of patients in the mild to moderate range for sedation, citing that any sedation more severe than that would require a more extensive period of recovery for the patient and the likely inability to drive himself or herself from the appointment safely. Titlow doesn’t often expend the liability associated with more heavy sedative options and finds his patients are always comfortable and unafraid.
Clinical studies and medical innovations are getting closer to a point where heavier sedatives will inflict lesser risk and/or a point where noninvasive sedatives will be more pervasive and deep with the allowance of complete reversal at any point. Dr. Titlow is open to medical advancements, provided that they are approved by the ADA, but maintains that the traditional methods of sedation are contemporary for now, and that in his experience – patients are satisfied.
New advancements in medical sedation are being made constantly. While research inches closer to a fully comprehensive, clinical control of sedation levels and recovery, traditional methods have equal staying power. Travis Titlow, Rocklin Dentist, maintains that the methods of 2014 are safe and effective with the ability to leave patients without worry.
