The Folson Group Launches Folson Board Academy, the First On-Demand Training Program for NYC Co-op and Condo Board Members

Nine-module course gives newly elected and experienced board members the governance, financial, and operational foundation to lead their buildings with confidence

The Folson Group, a New York City consultancy specializing in co-op and condo board advisory services, today announced the launch of Folson Board Academy, the first fully on-demand board member training program designed specifically for New York City cooperative and condominium buildings.

The program is available immediately at thefolsongroup.com/academy, with individual enrollment starting at $97.

New York City is home to more than 15,000 co-op and condo buildings, governed by boards of volunteer residents who are responsible for budgets, vendor contracts, capital projects, and legal compliance. Despite the complexity of the role, there is no required training for board service in New York State, and most board members begin their tenure without any formal preparation.

"Every year, thousands of New Yorkers get elected to their building's board and many walk into their first meeting without knowing what they signed up for," said Tina Larsson, co-founder of The Folson Group. "They are making decisions about budgets, insurance, maintenance, and management contracts with no training and no framework. Folson Board Academy's Know it. Run it. Own it. changes that."

A Curriculum Built From Real Board Experience

Folson Board Academy's Know it. Run it. Own it. consists of nine video modules covering the core competencies of board service: understanding the role and its responsibilities, board governance structure, the building's governing documents, fiduciary duty, ethics and conflict of interest, financial statement literacy, meeting management, recordkeeping, and working effectively with a property manager.

Each module includes a short video lesson, a quiz to confirm comprehension, and a downloadable resource that board members can put to use in their buildings immediately. Participants who complete all nine modules receive a Certificate of Achievement.

The course is fully on-demand and can be completed on any device. There are no pre-scheduled sessions, no deadlines, allowing individuals to work at their own pace and schedule, and progress is saved automatically. Most participants complete the full program in under an hour, though the format allows board members to work through one module at a time between meetings.

Created by the Consultants Behind the Board Table

The Folson Group was founded by Tina Larsson and Mark Foley, who began their board advisory careers by organizing a coup in their own NYC co-op. After taking over the board, they applied their Wall Street backgrounds to building operations and saved their co-op $340,000- 10% of the operating budget. Over the past 12 years, they have advised dozens of New York City co-op and condo boards on cost reduction, construction oversight, and transitioning them to a property management firm.

"This course is built on everything Mark and I learned the hard way, as co-op owners, as board members, and as consultants sitting across the table from boards that were struggling because nobody had prepared them for the job," Larsson said. "We built it so the next generation of board members does not have to figure it out through trial and error."
