The Federal Government Will Conduct a Review of Canada's Port Authorities for the First Time in 20 Years

For the first time in 20 years, Canada's port authorities will be reviewed by the Federal Government to ensure the stability of the country in the competition of the moving global market.

The Canadian Federal Government is conducting a review on the port authorities of Canada for the very first time in 20 years in an effort to stay competitive in the global market. The review will include a series of meetings, roundtables and engagement activities with influential individuals including the port authorities, stakeholders, provincial government representatives and select members of the public.

“This is great news for business owners like us. We love Canada and we want to see it become a major player in international markets stronger. The review will identify areas of opportunity for Canadian shippers and ports. With that information, those of us in the shipping industry can step up our level of competitiveness,” says Domenic Fortugno, proprietor of Viamar Scilla Transport International Inc, a leading shipping company in Canada.

This news was revealed by Marc Garneau, Transportation Minister at an event in British Columbia.

“We’re already highly competitive and efficient players (in) what is a really dynamic global trading system, but the reality is that system is changing rapidly and we see this review as an opportunity to further transform the port system into one that holistically integrates trade, supply chain partners, new technology and community,” says Wendy Zatylny, President of the Association of Canadian Port Authorities (ACPA).

“Ships are getting bigger to accommodate large volumes of cargo, and there are new innovations that have improved information technology and cargo processing efficiency — all things that port authorities must adapt and respond to.”

The report of the review is expected to release in 2019. It will detail the regulatory and legislative changes and other policies to aid the ACPA in establishing a stronger presence in global trade.
