Autonomous Cargo Ship Promises Bright Future for Operators and Consumers

First semi-autonomous cargo ship developed by Norwegian pioneers, will be ready for the waters by 2020.

According to Business Insider, the first semi-autonomous cargo ship is proposed to set sail by 2020. Designed and developed by Norwegian pioneers, Yara International and Kongsberg Gruppen, this cargo ship will have the advanced technology required to “navigate and dock on its own”. Bruno Fortugno, Export Manager for Viamar Scilia Transport International, a Canadian leader in freight forwarding, comments on this new development.

“Technological advancement is increasing at an accelerated rate. We see now more than ever that autonomous vehicles are becoming prevalent and important in connecting Canadians and the world. The new initiative by Yara International and Kongsberg Gruppen, represents an exciting future for shipping efficiency and cost-effectiveness.”

With weekly and bi-weekly shipments to over 250 international ports, Viamar understands the challenges that may come with autonomous cargo ships. Business Insider identifies the safety challenges, such as weather conditions and busy shipping lanes, which will need to be addressed prior to completion. The movement to autonomous shipping will also see a reduction in labor costs, in addition to lower costs for transported goods. This surely ascertains a bright future for both operators and consumers.
