Over 20 million people are defined as being blind or visually-impaired. Whether sudden or gradual, the loss of vision is a traumatic experience. An individual who loses his or her sight undergoes the devastation of not being able to view the world and all that it encompasses. Many of these people want to keep their independence as much as possible. One product that can aid the blind and visually-impaired in being independent is The Smart Guide. It offers them a compact, hand-held GPS navigation system to help them navigate their surroundings. The Smart Guide has a braille keyboard, voice-controlled operation, and a verbal response mode for indicating routes, directions, and alerts to the presence of obstacles in the user's path. The compact Smart Guide is powered by a rechargeable internal battery or battery-pack and includes an adapter and charger cord. Televised test marketing has been completed indicating an exceptional consumer response to The Smart Guide.
The Patent Pending The Smart Guide was invented by Linda Te of Philadelphia, PA, who said, “What makes The Smart Guide different from standard hand-held GPS units is that it uses an automated voice to relay routes and directions. Standard GPS units relay this information on a display screen. The Smart Guide offers voice-recognition and voice-controlled operation. Also, it features a braille keypad for manual entry. The Smart Guide has built-in subsonic or radar-like capability to detect obstacles in the user's path. The automated voice issues a specific warning or route recommendation when needed. The Smart Guide can also be configured to detect the current state of street lights and their position along mass transit routes.”
The inventor added, “The Smart Guide can function as a detachable accessory with a white cane. Included with the Smart Guide is a bracelet for mounting it on a cane. To ensure the most accurate GPS functions possible, a toggle switch indicates whether The Smart Guide is being hand-held or attached to a cane.”
