On Tuesday, October 24th, St. Catherine’s Village is hosting a free educational seminar highlighting tips and strategies for managing year-end taxes.

The seminar takes place in the Commons Activity Room at 200 Dominican Drive on the continuing care retirement community (CCRC) campus in Madison, Mississippi. The hour-long event will begin at 10:30 a.m. and is open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

While a CCRC requires an up-front investment, over the long term it can provide an outstanding value for seniors. Understanding the tax implications can help someone determine if this is the right choice for them.

Mary Margaret Judy, Executive Director at St. Catherine's Village

“Local CPA and tax expert Jan Lewis will discuss what’s important for seniors when filing their taxes, specifically as it relates to care and living expenses,” said Mary Margaret Judy, executive director at St. Catherine’s Village. “Retirees, their families and caregivers are welcome to attend and learn what has changed for 2017.”

As a tax partner at Haddox Reid Eubank Betts PLLC in Jackson, Lewis’ responsibilities include income and estate tax planning, research, and compliance. Her areas of practice include healthcare, construction and real estate. She has taught classes in the area of individual tax planning and has given presentations on financial literacy, current tax policy, and other tax issues to various groups across Mississippi.

Lewis is active in the Mississippi Society of CPAs, having served on the MSCPA Board of Governors and as a past president. She has previously served as an officer of the Society’s Central Chapter, and as a trustee of the Mississippi Tax Institute. A member of the MSCPA's Long Range Planning Committee, Lewis currently is the chair of the MSCPA's Young CPAs Liaison Committee. She has served as the MSCPA’s elected representative to the AICPA Council and on the AICPA Life Insurance and Disability Plans Committee. She recently was appointed to the AICPA's Tax Practice and Procedures Committee. Active in her community, Lewis serves as a board member of the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson.

During the educational seminar, Lewis will offer a review of this year’s tax policies and update pertinent information from the IRS.

“One of the living options at St. Catherine’s Village is all-inclusive life care, which guarantees residents services throughout their retirement years at a predetermined rate,” said Judy. “While a CCRC requires an up-front investment, over the long term it can provide an outstanding value for seniors. Understanding the tax implications can help someone determine if this is the right choice for them.”

As a CCRC, St. Catherine’s Village offers living options for adults 62 years and older as they age. This includes independent living in apartments and garden homes, assisted living in Marian Hall, memory care in Campbell Cove and Hughes Center, and skilled nursing in Siena Center. St. Catherine’s Village now offers skilled nursing dedicated to memory care, as well.

As Mississippi’s preeminent all-inclusive life care community, St. Catherine’s Village is the first in the state to earn accreditation by CARF-CCAC. This “commitment to excellence” seal signifies that the campus exceeds the standards established by the only international accrediting body for CCRCs. Furthermore, Campbell Cove and the Hughes Center are both licensed by the State of Mississippi as “Alzheimer’s Assisted Living” facilities.

In addition to unparalleled facilities, St. Catherine’s Village offers a caring staff, companionship, 24-hour on-duty security, 160 acres of protected and beautiful outdoor spaces, and engaging activities along with access to on-site resident-centered care and a mission-focused environment.
