Socially Conscious Investing Interviews Carol Schillios Founder of the Fabric of Life
Online, May 29, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Carol Schillios, the founder of Fabric of Life, http://www.fabricoflife.org, joins Robin Eschler on Socially Conscious Investing online radio, http://bit.ly/SociallyConsciousInvesting, to discuss the organization's work to facilitate micro-lending, education and health care in the developing world.
Fabric Of Life is an organization born from the Schillios Development Foundation which was formed in 2002 with the goal to support cooperative development projects that directly impact the quality of life for families in developing countries. The Schillios Development Foundation supports three primary activities:
· Micro-credit programs for micro-entrepreneurs
· Increasing access to education
· Increasing access to affordable health care
The Foundation supports partnerships that focus on cooperative principles of self-help, non-discrimination, social responsibility and cooperation. Due to Carol's experience with helping build micro-lending systems in developing countries, she and her partner in Africa have succeeded in developing educational programs that simultaneously preserve native arts and lift begging children to self-esteem.
"Children who otherwise would be begging in the streets are given a healthy living education that addresses a myriad of subjects including false beliefs about pregnancy and that teaches skills that maintain the native arts of their culture," explains Carol. "We take a holistic approach that respects who they are and gives them the resources to support themselves and their families."
Carol Schillios initially drew attention to her cause by spending 90 days on the roof of her home with the objective of raising $1 million. She asked that each person hearing about her time on the roof donate just $1. She accomplished raising $100,000 before coming down to continue her work for women living in extreme poverty. "The wind blew me and a zero off of the roof," she quips.
Although she lost a zero, every dollar went to helping the women and children. Carol's clear passion for respecting the people benefiting from her work in combination with her business experience have established a program that is purely driven by volunteer help and that is able to take donations and put them directly to work on the program designed to educate and develop practical skills.
Carol discusses the issue of patriarchal influence as well as other issues of micro-lending in explaining how the model of service she has developed is providing a channel for creating work and income. "Where there is no industry, we are exporting the products they create, beautiful fabrics and jewelry, and finding channels of distribution," Carol explains.
