Resolution Development Services Teams with NDSU Professor to Fight Obesity

Resolution Development

Resolution Development Services Inc., a leading provider of product development services to the medical, life science and consumer markets, has partnered with Professor Glenn Dorsam in the Department of Microbiological Sciences at North Dakota State University (NDSU) with his studies of the gut microbiome and its effects on obesity.

Professor Dorsam studies a protein called vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) that plays important roles in immunity, circadian rhythms and metabolism. Professor Dorsam has been funded throughout his 12 year career at NDSU by state and national agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, focused on VIP’s role in human leukemia, asthma and more recently, obesity development.

Obesity has become a national epidemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 36.5% of US adults have obesity.  Obesity has been linked to comorbidities such as heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancer.  There are several factors that can cause obesity, including diet, genetics and environment.  The CDC estimates, “The annual medical costs of obesity in the US was $147 billion in 2008 U.S. dollars.”

Studies suggest that vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) plays a critically important role in obesity development. In support of Professor Dorsam’s continuing research at North Dakota State University, Resolution Development Services has contributed funding to help address this growing crisis.

“My laboratory hypothesizes that VIP signaling impinges on gut bacterial composition, inflammation and energy homeostasis leading to human obesity development,” said Professor Dorsam. “By partnering with Resolution, a leading designer and developer of next generation diagnostics, our research can better understand these molecular connections and help with early detection of risk factors as well as contribute to new drug targets to mitigate human obesity.”

“As a partner to many companies in life sciences, Resolution understands the importance of research and diagnostics to pioneering the next generation of life-saving therapies”, said Leo Carayannopoulos, CEO of Resolution Development Services. “We are excited to team with Professor Dorsam on his ground-breaking work.”
