PUSH Midwifery Birth Center Opens Doors

New birth center offers expectant mothers an out-of-hospital childbirth option.

Until this month’s Grand Opening of PUSH Midwifery, women living in the suburbs north of Los Angeles have had only two options, deliver in a hospital or drive over an hour to the nearest birth center. But there is great news for the Conejo Valley’s mamas-to-be! PUSH Midwifery is opening its doors to clients and the public, October 19th from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, for a festive opening celebration to kick off a new era of choice in childbirth for families living in the Conejo Valley, including Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Calabasas, and Agoura Hills. Other areas served are  Malibu, Woodland Hills, Simi Valley, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Ojai.

The ‘magic’ that Robyn Pool, founder of PUSH, brings to each birth is... herself. Her wisdom, her experience, and her unflinching commitment to each and every woman having the birth experience they desire is what women return to her for, birth after birth. She has attended over 500 births to date and her long career in traditional and alternative women’s health care have more than prepared her for opening PUSH. She is warm, funny, and approachable. She radiates a contagious sparkle that nourishes women through the sometimes uncertain transition to motherhood. She is true triple threat: vast experience, a vibrant personality, and a breathtaking center in which to deliver her services.

"When our center was located in Inglewood, most midwives wouldn't venture even that deep in the hood. But Robyn would be on call for us anytime we needed her and would drive all the way from Thousand Oaks. She is an amazing midwife."

Racha Tahani Lawler, Clinical Director at The Community Birth Center

The PUSH center reflects the meticulous care paid to everything and everyone in Robyn’s inner circle - to which every client immediately and permanently belongs. Environmental elements have been planned with the sensitivities of new mother-to-be in mind. Soothing paint colors were custom mixed by hand. In the waiting room a stunning series of art pieces depict the nine month of fetal growth. Images of iconic midwives line the hallway and the vintage furniture and decor could easily be found in a high-end boutique hotel. The place radiates comfort and quality, two words patients use to describe Robyn’s care as well. Most importantly, the birth suite is tasteful and luxurious. With a deep birthing tub, tons of natural light, and linens fit for a queen, it is exactly what every laboring mother wants and needs.

Fellow midwives and clients rave. “Robyn’s relentless devotion to opening a birth center in Thousand Oaks has inspired everyone in our community. She did it … and it’s perfect.”, states Debbie Allen founder of Tribe Midwifery. The head midwife at the only black-owned birth center in LA, Racha Tahani Lawler, says, “When our center was located in Inglewood, most midwives wouldn’t venture even that deep in the hood. But Robyn would be on call for us anytime we needed her and would drive all the way from Thousand Oaks. She is an amazing woman.”

More women are choosing midwife assisted births than ever, especially in the suburbs. “The perception of midwives has completely shifted,” said Dr. Jacques Moritz, director of the gynecology division at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt. “It used to be just the hippies who wanted to go to midwives. Now it’s the women in the red-bottom shoes!”. Red-bottom shoes refers to shoes by Louboutin which cost roughly $1200 a pair. The trend has moved up into the wealthiest one percent. Also, documentaries like “The Business of Being Born” by celebrity mom Ricki Lake exposed the staggering high-rates of unnecessary Caesarean deliveries performed in hospitals. Demand for midwifery care will continue to spike and PUSH is poised to support the women who choose it.

Even prior to its official opening PUSH midwifery is approaching full capacity. Robyn says, “So far the response to PUSH has been overwhelmingly positive - which has been gratifying after the immense love and labor (pun intended) I put into it.” From the comfort of her gorgeous center, Robyn will support and nurture the best possible experience for every budding mother, from conception to delivery, whether they come in “red-bottom shoes” or Birkenstocks.
