Portland Attorney, Tom D'Amore, Offers Ways to Reduce Record Number of Road Fatalities

More police and safe driving behaviors reduce road fatalities according to Portland personal injury lawyer, Tom D’Amore.

Portland personal injury attorney, Tom D’Amore, and his professional team at D’Amore Law Group see the devastating effect on a family of the death of a loved one in a motor vehicle accident. The announcement by the state of a 10-year record number of fatal collisions on Oregon roads makes him believe motorists should be doing more to avoid common behaviors, such as distracted driving, that increase the risk of a driver being involved in an accident.

According to the Oregon State Police, driving while impaired has decreased as a risk factor in causing traffic accidents. However, “distracted drivers,” when talking or texting on a cellphone, have caused an increase in fatal and non-fatal collisions. This fact prompted the state to address the issue of distracted driving by increasing maximums to $1,000 for a first offense and up to $2,500 for a second offense or for a first offense resulting in a collision.

Attorney D’Amore cautions drivers to avoid distractions and focus their attention on the road and on maintaining control over their vehicles. Other behaviors to avoid include speeding, unsafe lane changes, failing yield the right-of-way, and reckless or careless driving. He also points to the need for the state and local governments to increase the number of law enforcement officers assigned to enforcing the traffic laws.

“Most people don’t think of the price of gas as affecting the number of motor vehicle accidents, but higher gas prices usually result in few vehicles on the roads,” according to Tom D’Amore. “When gas prices climbed to more than $4 a gallon about 10 years ago, the number of fatal collisions on Oregon roads went down. Today’s low gas prices at the pump makes it essential for drivers to practice safe driving behaviors to avoid being in an accident.”

“Veteran police officers talk about how the number of fatal accidents decreased when there were more officers patrolling state roads,” said Mr. D’Amore. “As a general rule, people resort to their best behavior when they see a police officer or a patrol car on the road.”

Mr. D’Amore observed that, as much as he and his team of attorneys fight to achieve fair and just compensation for families of the victims of fatal motor vehicle accidents, no amount of money can replace their loved one. More needs to be done to prevent fatal collisions through increased driver awareness of risky behaviors and more police officers enforcing traffic laws.
