Christian Non-Profit Teams Up With Texas-based Anti-Sex Trafficking Initiative to Raise Awareness and Offer Support
IRVING, Texas, September 14, 2020 (Newswire.com) - As part of its charity outreach initiative, OneShare Health will be partnering with Traffick911, an anti-sex trafficking agency based in North Texas, during the month of September.
According to its website, Traffick911 helps survivors “embrace healing and freedom by building trust-based relationships and providing ongoing field-based support.” Rachel Peoples, Traffick911’s Marketing & Administrative Coordinator, said they’ve experienced an incredibly positive response from survivors who have been served by the agency.
“Traffick911’s program grew out of a natural response to trafficked children,” said Peoples. “The youth we met in our own communities changed our lives, and the relationships we built with them gave us a lens through which to view trauma-informed care of victims. Our organization is very much a product of what we have learned from walking with survivors recovering from the trauma of trafficking.”
U.S. law defines human trafficking as the use of force, fraud or coercion to compel a person into commercial sex acts or labor or services against his or her will (PolarisProject.org). “Traffickers may be family members, recruiters, employers, or strangers who exploit vulnerability and circumstance to coerce victims [...],” stated the 2019 Trafficking in Persons Report by the U.S. Department of State. “They commit these crimes through schemes that take victims hundreds of miles away from their homes or in the same neighborhoods where they were born.”
The Report also revealed that 77 percent of trafficking victims are exploited within their country of residence, while, in 2018, the Human Trafficking Institute reported that 51.6 percent of the human trafficking cases in the U.S. were sex trafficking cases involving only children.
In response to this growing social issue and the misconceptions surrounding it, Traffick911 is on a mission to share the stories of survivors and to rectify the “relational brokenness” that many young trafficking victims have experienced. They do this by encouraging survivors to meet with highly trained advocates and mentors for trust-building and peer-to-peer support groups.
“The most rewarding part of this work is walking with the survivors we meet,” said Peoples. “Every person on our team can attest to the fact that we learn just as much as from them as they do from us, and it’s that mutually respectful relationship that ultimately facilitates healing, both on the individual level and on the community level.”
