National Geographic Maintains Dominance as Top U.S. Media Publisher

Shareablee today announced the top 10 U.S. Media Publisher rankings for February 2017, as compiled by Shareablee, Inc. - the number one social media measurement service.

U.S. media publishers accounted for 1.3 billion total social actions (likes, comments, shares, retweets, dislikes), with 462 million actions from Instagram, 762 million from Facebook, 67 million from Twitter and 9.4 million from YouTube (excluding views).

The media publishing industry represented 17% share of consumer actions across U.S. brands in February. Total actions for the media publishing industry saw a 10% increase compared to January, driven by significant growth on Facebook which grew by 14%.

National Geographic continued its dominance of the rankings taking the number one position again with 110 million actions. UNILAD in second position, garnered 101 million actions. Total engagement for the top 10 publishers grew by 15% versus the top 10 in January. Rounding out the top 5 are Bleacher Report which grew by 3% and USA Today with an impressive 34% growth in engagement versus January. 

Key Engagement Drivers in February

USA TODAY’s category leading growth was driven by its investment in Facebook video - posting 12% percent more video content which drove 38% of the engagement. The Top performing post was a video featuring two pigs walking, capturing over 177 thousand social actions.

National Geographic’s performance was driven by a combination of links and videos. Its top post was a 360 video on Giant Sequoias on a Changing Planet Part 2. The top link was the announcement by NASA of the discovery of the seven Earth-size worlds.

  • The Top Five Publishing Brands on Facebook: UNILAD (88.7 million actions), USA TODAY (46.5 million actions), Tasty (28.5 million actions), The Dodo (26.1million actions) and Huffington Post (20.8 million actions)
  • The Top Five Publishing Brands on Twitter:  Bleacher Report (8.9 million actions), The Hill (4.2 million actions), The New York Times (3.4 million actions), Washington Post (2.5 million actions) and Buzzfeed (2.1 million actions).
  • The Top Five Publishing Brands on Instagram: National Geographic (103 million actions) Bleacher Report (64.3 million actions) National Geographic Travel (26 million actions), Complex (23.5 million actions) and HYPEBEAST (22.3 million actions)
  • The Top Five Publishing Brands on YouTube (excluding views): BuzzFeed Video (1.4 million actions), Movie Clips (646 thousand actions), Tasty (614 thousand actions), Vox.com (475 thousand actions) and Screen Junkies (391 thousand actions)
