National Civic Art Society Applauds President Trump for Signing Federal Architecture Executive Order

On Friday, President Donald Trump issued an Executive Order entitled “Promoting Beautiful Federal Civic Architecture” that will dramatically reorient federal architecture in a traditional direction, including by requiring that new federal buildings in Washington, D.C. be classical in design. In response to this historic signing, Justin Shubow, President of the National Civic Art Society (NCAS), has issued the following statement:

“Americans have long understood that classical architecture is not only beautiful, it embodies the key values of our representative government. Such distinguished and inspiring buildings connect us to our heritage, and are associated with the continuity, equality, and openness essential to a functioning republic. The design of federal buildings should reflect the aesthetic and symbolic preferences of the people they are built to serve – namely, classical and traditional architecture. Yet since the mid-19th century, Modernist mandarins controlling government architecture have been forcing ugly designs upon us. On Friday, President Trump stood firm for tradition and beauty in public architecture, and for the heartfelt desires of the American people. The National Civic Art Society applauds President Trump for signing this Executive Order, and we look forward to seeing the beautiful buildings that will now become part of his legacy.”

After the Executive Order was first proposed earlier this year, NCAS commissioned a poll conducted by the non-partisan polling firm The Harris Poll gauging Americans’ preferences for federal architecture. This poll of over 2,000 U.S. adults found that nearly three-quarters of Americans (72%) – including majorities across political, racial/ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic lines – prefer traditional architecture for federal office buildings and U.S. courthouses. The survey report and its methodology can be found here.

The National Civic Art Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., that educates and empowers civic leaders in the promotion of public art and architecture worthy of our great Republic.
