Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries Hosts Free Kever Avot Community Service on September 20th

Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries invites the community to attend its 61st Annual Kever Avot Memorial Service on September 20. Kever Avot, which in Hebrew literally means "graves of the fathers", is an ancient custom dating back to the beginning of Jewish history where family members visit cemeteries between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to honor parents and loved ones who have passed.

On Sunday, September 20th, Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries will host its 61st annual Kever Avot Memorial services at 10:00 AM at Mount Sinai Hollywood Hills and at 1:00 PM at Mount Sinai Simi Valley.

Kever Avot, which in Hebrew literally means “graves of the fathers”, is an ancient custom dating back to the beginning of Jewish history. Each year, between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, it is a Jewish tradition to visit the cemetery to pay homage to parents and loved ones and to gain strength through communal prayer.

"We know that the sanctity of the Jewish High Holy Days often evokes a wealth of emotions and memories which is why we invite everyone, including those whose loved ones are buried elsewhere or far away, to join our community as we pray together, support one another and honor the memory of those who have passed.

Len Lawrence, General Manager

“In this, our 61st year of observing Kever Avot, we look forward to bringing our community together to pray together as one,” said Len Lawrence, General Manager of Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries. “We know that the sanctity of the Jewish High Holy Days often evokes a wealth of emotions and memories which is why we invite everyone, including those whose loved ones are buried elsewhere or far away, to join our community as we pray together, support one another and honor the memory of those who have passed.

Both free Kever Avot services will be led by Rabbi Nicole Guzik and Cantor Marcus Feldman from Sinai Temple. In Hollywood Hills, they will be joined by the Sinai Temple Choir, under the direction of Aryell Cohen, and in Simi Valley, they will be joined by the UJA Choir, under the direction of Dr. Noreen Green to sing music and prayers in Hebrew and English which evoke tradition and inspire reflection and meditation.

Both Kever Avot services will begin with the sound of the shofar (the traditional Ram’s horn) and end with the recitation of the Kaddish (the traditional Jewish prayer recited by mourners.) All who remember loved ones are encouraged to attend a service to show our strength as a community.
