MillionaireMatch: Rachel Roy on Gaining Success in the Fashion World

Rachel Roy has been making her mark in the fashion world since the early 2000s. She became the creative director for Rocawear, a fashion line started by mogul Jay-Z, before embarking on her own. Through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, Roy has shown perseverance that continues to keep her on top. Her line has been worn by the everyday woman up to First Lady Michelle Obama. MillionaireMatch.com is sharing how she gained success in an oversaturated market.

“You have to be brave enough to jump and grow your wings on the way down. You’re never going to have the wings before,” Rachel said about entrepreneurship. People may want to have all their ducks in a row, but getting starting should be their goal. In 2004, Roy started with an upscale fashion line. She had no business plan nor thought of white space in her industry. Roy simply started with making clothes that she needed and wanted to wear. “Think about how much you have accomplished even in starting. The difference between entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs really is the start. Many people have great ideas, but not many act on their great ideas,” she said. That concept has been spread by many successful entrepreneurs -execution is everything.

Four years later, Roy decided to make a shift with her line to start offering a product for the everyday woman. In 2008, the financial market was crashing around everyone making this a less than ideal time to make a pivot to creating a more affordable line. “You will get faced with those types of big decisions. You think one thing is your dream, but the universe opens up another avenue where you can be of service,” Roy said. What helped was that she didn’t have a lot of competition at that time. She officially launched the RACHEL Rachel Roy line in 2009 including shoes, swimwear, accessories and outerwear.

None of this happened without hard work, failing moments and a good fight. “Success does not provide any type of knowledge, rather failure does. The more failure the more growth,” Roy said. One of the toughest moments for Roy’s career came when her partners no longer wanted to support the line. Roy was encouraged to not get into a legal battle to fight for her name in fashion, but like any determined artist, she ignored it. Her seven years working in licensing came in handy as she bought back her name. One pearl of wisdom Roy has learned when moments like this happen: “I was smart enough to know that this sucks, but I’m going to be amazing in two weeks.”

Another valuable lesson that Roy learned is that those who are successful are confident, sure of who they are and what they stand for. “Happiness equals sexiness,” she said. We couldn’t agree with Roy more. Make sure to catch her Spring 2018 collection!
