Richmond, Va. - Renowned maritime artist John M. Barber, painter of
the Chesapeake Bay, will join son Joshua R. Barber, painter of modern
icons, for their first-ever joint art exhibition October 9.
The show, "Barber vs. Barber," is John Barber's first major Richmond
show in seven years and Joshua Barber's first local show in three
years. The exhibition will open at Gallery 5800/Suitable for Framing
on October 9 and will feature approximately 50 original pieces.
John Barber, a Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists, has
painted professionally for more than 30 years. He rose to fame in the
1980s painting the characteristic seascapes and historic vessels of
the Chesapeake Bay, most notably the now-rare skipjacks. John Barber
has also painted Virginia landscapes, Richmond cityscapes and scenes
from his travels in Europe and elsewhere. He has painted for President
Reagan and the Clinton administration; one of his fondest memories is
of the eleven days he spent with Walter Cronkite while creating a
painting of his beloved sailing yacht Wyntje entering Edgartown Harbor
on Martha's Vineyard.
Joshua Barber paints modern icons. His stylized figures depict
microcosms of memory both whimsical and dark. He has held two solo
shows in Richmond and been selected for the Virginia Museum of Fine
Arts' "Art After Hours" for three consecutive years. Joshua Barber has
most recently shown his work in New York, Los Angeles and London; his
last exhibit was held in August at Knifesmith Gallery in Bristol,
England.
This show also marks the dedication of the Barber Room at Gallery
5800, located above Suitable for Framing, where selected works by both Barbers will be on long-term
display.
