Koosh Jewelers Explains the '4Cs' Diamond Evaluation System to Prospective Buyers

According to Koosh Jewelers, on the search for the best diamond studs, one needs to have a way of evaluating them properly. Those in the diamond industry reference the "4 C's," or Clarity, Color, Cut, and Carat. No two diamonds are alike, so the 4 C's are a quick way to estimate the quality of a diamond stud.

According to the American Gem Society, "The most important of the 4Cs is the cut because it has the greatest influence on a diamond's sparkle. The cut has the greatest effect on a diamond's appearance. In determining the quality of the cut, the diamond grader evaluated the cutter's skill in the fashioning of the diamond. The more precise the cut, the more captivation the diamond is to the eye. The second most important of the 4Cs is color, which refers to a diamond's lack of color. The less color, the higher the grade. Colorless diamonds are the rarest. Other natural colors are known as 'fancy,' and their color grading is different than from white colorless diamonds."

Although most diamond purchase decisions are about the emotions and excitement that a particular stone elicits, it is important for buyers to understand the science behind the stone.

Clarity refers to how many imperfections are in a diamond. This is often not a problem as most imperfections are microscopic and thus invisible to the naked eye. Carat refers to the diamond's total weight and not its size. One carat equals 1/5 gram and is subdivided into 100 points. Carat weight is the most objective grade of the 4Cs.

"Although most diamond purchase decisions are about the emotions and excitement that a particular stone elicits, it is important for buyers to understand the science behind the stone," remarked Ari Sipper, Co-Owner of Koosh Jewelers.
