Importance of Music Lessons from an Early Age

The fun part is that these lessons do not need to be formal lessons at the initial stage. A parent plays an important role in introducing music to a child.

Everyone is faced with making decisions for their children and knowing the right time to make the right call has always been a tricky situation for all. For first time parents they would only have their own experiences and the comments from others about their children or their childhood to weigh the odds and make a decision.

You may be interested in engaging your children in music lessons after being exposed to talented children in your neighborhood. But on the other hand you may also be uneasy from many negative feedbacks from parents who had been forced into music lessons when they were young, or seeing young children being forced to attend music lessons which they point blank express they do not wish to go to. Also the many posters you see regarding vocal training in Dubai and Music classes may be influencing your decision

To begin with, it is important to understand the reasons why you want your child to attend music lessons and what is defined as music lessons.

Many researches point out that from birth to around 9 years children have the ability to develop music sensibility. The mental mechanisms and structures for understanding and processing music are at the prime stages of development. This is why many studies say it is important to expose your children to music in this age range.

Now that we have studies to prove its importance to begin music lessons from an early age; the real question is how we should approach children with music lessons. What should the goal be to providing music lessons for children?

When it comes to exposing children to music lessons, we must be very clear that we are not aiming and forcing them to master music or instruments. We should only encourage them to be interested to learn, gain the experience and develop a relationship with music from a young age. These kind of lessons can start from birth and should start within the Childs’ first year.

The fun part is that these lessons do not need to be formal lessons at the initial stage. A parent plays an important role in introducing music to a child. These can be simple exercises like playing an instrument for the baby, or gently moving the baby (dancing, swaying) to music which will help them to start focusing on music.

Around the age of three, parents can move on to formal lessons. Again the first goal being only to develop skills and not to master music or an instrument. At this stage children can be gently guided to name instruments, identify melodies and beat in time with music. To make sure your children do not  grow up to hate music, make sure you choose your Childs first music class carefully. Ensure the teachers share your goals and not forcing the children to perform. Carefully evaluate the Than before finalizing your selection.

From ages’ five to ten, children can be slowly trained on an instrument or two. Violins, Guitars and Pianos are few of the instruments introduced to children at this age.

By ten, children will have developed an interest and skills in the instrument they have been introduced to. They will also be able to try larger instruments and the goals of the music lessons will slowly transit from just to gain experience to actually improving the performance.

As you may have understood, music lessons are of utmost importance for a child from an early stage to assist with the development process. These guidelines could vary based on the ability of the children and/or teachers. You can argue that learning music, just like riding a bike can be learnt later on in life. But they may never become a natural and music may never become a part of them unless introduced early in life.
