HomeAid Expected to Collect 3 Million Diapers for Homeless Families in 1 Day

IRVINE, Calif., June 17, 2019 (Newswire.com) - ​​​​​​​​HomeAid, a national nonprofit provider of housing and resources for the homeless sets out to collect 3 million diapers for homeless families in just one day. Builders for Babies, a one-day diaper collection and distribution event benefiting the HomeAid Essentials community outreach program will take place on June 21 in three locations across the country – Orange County, California, Salt Lake City, Utah and Denver, Colorado.

According to the National Law Center on Homelessness, each year over 3.5 million Americans experience homelessness at some point. Nearly 1.5 million of them will be children. Families can spend between $80-$100 per month on diapers for one child, but the cost can go up if there isn’t transportation to big box stores. While the cost of food can be addressed with access to food banks or by tapping into public nutrition programs, little, if any, help exists to address diaper need.

“Homelessness is a national crisis, and young mothers and their children are some of the most heartbreaking victims to witness,” said Peter Simons, HomeAid America CEO. “People are having to choose between buying diapers or buying food, and unfortunately, many state and federal assistance programs do not allocate money for diapers. When supporters donate diapers to our drive, they have an immediate impact, helping struggling families meet their most basic needs.”

Diaper need is the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep a baby clean, dry and healthy. The National Diaper Bank network reports that one in three families in America cannot afford the required diapers needed to raise a healthy child. HomeAid addresses this challenge for homeless families by asking individuals and local businesses to collect the essentials families need to care for and raise healthy children and bring to HomeAid’s one-day Builders for Babies collection event held on Friday, June 21. HomeAid will distribute donated items to more than 30 nonprofit partners that focus on alleviating poverty and ending homelessness. Donations provide critical support for the families these organizations serve in their housing programs.
