Hastings & Hastings Supports Upcoming National Blood Donor Month

As cold winter weather sets in, hospitals and doctor's offices across the nation start getting packed. December through January typically sees an increase in cold and flu symptoms. This combined with holiday travel, and the general winter blues usually results in a steep decline in blood donations. Unfortunately, the need for blood does not likewise decline during this period of time.

The American Red Cross reports that this almost always results in a dramatic lack of blood in blood banks throughout the nation. In an effort to combat this deficit, The American Red Cross promotes January as Nation Blood Donor Month. Hastings & Hastings stands in full support of National Blood Donor Month and implores everyone who is healthy to head out and donate.

Giving blood is an easy and nearly painless way to save lives. Did you know that a single pint of blood can save as many as three lives? Millions of patients are in need. That need grows even larger this time of year.  Giving blood doesn’t take much time. After an orange juice and a little bite to eat, you will feel good as new. If you haven’t donated before, this is a great time to start thinking about it.

January was first declared National Blood Donor Month in 1970. The Red Cross asks individuals who are healthy to help out those who are not so lucky.

“There are so many unpredictable factors at play that can affect the blood supply during January; it’s a critical time to remind the public of the need for more donors,” said Rodney Wilson, communications manager for the American Red Cross Central Ohio Blood Services Region.  “If you are in good health, now is the time to share that good health with patients in need.”

Individuals may safely donate blood once every 56 days. Individuals must be at least 17 years of age (or 16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, and been deemed to be in generally good health. The process of donating blood is relatively painless. Donors will feel a simple needle prick, then they will lay back and relax as blood is drawn, which will take just a few minutes. If potential donors have any further questions, they are encouraged to visit the American Red Cross website at www.redcross.org
